Because we believe that patient safety comes first, we believe all physical exams of genitalia or private areas must have an additional person present in the room in addition to the physician or practitioner. This person is a chaperone or a family member of the patient’s choosing. Our medical assistants are willing to stand in for this job as needed, but this is a requirement for all exams no matter what the patient’s age. The provider determines who is the most appropriate chaperone on some occasions. Confidential discussions can then take place separately after the patient has dressed and is no longer being physically examined.
